How Dedicated Servers Function

When we talk about web hosting servers, there are three major categories - shared hosting servers, VPS (virtual private web servers) and dedicated servers. Shared web servers host numerous clients and hence the system resources per account are restricted, VPS plans give you more configuration freedom, but also influence other virtual hosting servers on the hardware node if utilized rashly, and dedicated servers offer you the opportunity to do everything you like without messing with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are normally much more expensive than shared hosting web servers or virtual hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The reply is quite simple. If your firm has a high resource-consuming web portal, or just has very specific server configuration requirements, the wisest option is a dedicated server. For someone who is prepared to invest in security and stability, the greater price is not a concern. You obtain full root-level access and can use 100% of the web hosting server's resources without anyone else using these resources and messing with your web sites.

Hardware specifications

The majority of hosting service providers, incl. us at Super Hosting, offer several different hardware configurations you can select from in line with your requirements. The configurations offer different kinds of processors, a different number of cores, different RAM and disk drive sizes and different bandwidth usage quotas. You can choose a hosting CP, which is a convenient GUI if you want to utilize the dedicated hosting server for hosting purposes only and choose not to resort to an SSH terminal for all the modifications you will be making. We offer 3 kinds of hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting Control Panel of your choosing

If you are a confident Linux user (our dedicated hosting servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated server via SSH only. That, though, could be awkward, particularly if you want to grant complete root-level access to somebody else who has less technical knowledge than yourself. That is why having web hosting CP software pre-activated is a bright idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP software that we provide does not give you full root-level access and is mainly suitable for somebody who runs plenty of web portals that swallow lots of resources, but would like to manage the web portals, databases and mail aliases through a user-friendly hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting Control Panels, on the other hand, give you full server root privileges and include 3 access levels - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell web hosting plans instead of utilizing the web server solely for yourself, you should choose one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In case of a predicament with your dedicated web hosting server, like an unresponsive Apache or a network downtime, it is desirable to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at Super Hosting the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated server as well. Backups are also an additional option - the web hosting provider offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could select a type of RAID that would allow you to store the very same data on 2 server hard disks as a protective measure in the event of a server hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted full root privileges deletes something by accident.
